John Young was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in c1750 . He matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1764, graduating MA in 1769. On 9 June 1774, he was installed as Professor of Greek at the University and proved to be an efficient and popular teacher. After filling his chair for nearly half a century, Young died in Glasgow on 18 November 1820 .
